Fedora+Digital Library Repository
Thanks to Leslie Johnston for giving us the latest scoop on the UVa Digital Library Repository and Fedora projects. The repository currently holds 15,000 images and over 700 electronic texts and is set to ramping up to go live this summer! If you’re On Grounds, take a look at the digital collection tools and give Leslie and her team some feedback.

Steve,
How did this project end up with the same name as the Fedora Linux distribution? Considering the plethora of photography related words, a hat seems an odd title for an image repository.
I’m glad you asked! The Flexible Extensible Digital Object and Repository Architecture (Fedora) came to life as a DARPA and NSF-funded research project project at Cornell University in 1997. The University of Virginia began contributing in 1999 and has been a partner ever since.
The whole Fedora vs. Fedora mess is explained rather well on the Fedora.info site. Fedora 1.0 was released in early 2003, months before Red Hat announced the formation of its Fedora [Linux] Project. So perhaps the real question should be “what does a hat have to do with Linux?”
