Getting Started with Grails (Richmond)

The Richmond Java User Group talk “Getting Started with Grails” is tonight (Wednesday, March 21st) at 5:30 PM in Glen Allen, VA.

Grails is an open-source web application framework that’s all about getting things done. Grails combines best-of-breed Java technologies (including Hibernate and Spring), convention over configuration, and the powerful and dynamic Groovy language. Together with these elements and Groovy’s ability to integrate seamlessly with your existing Java code, Grails finally legitimizes rapid web application development for the Java platform.

UVa Computer Science alum Jason Rudolph will be your tour guide as he demonstrates first-hand how to use Grails to build a fully-functioning and flexible web application in minimal time. As he builds the app, you’ll also explore the Grails project structure, its MVC elements, and the power of dynamic methods. See how easy it is to write concise code with Groovy’s highly-expressive nature and spare yourself much of the coding and configuration of many traditional frameworks by using Grails sensible defaults (à la convention over configuration).

Jason Rudolph is an Application Architect at Railinc, where he develops software to help trains move more efficiently throughout North America. He recently delivered an industry-wide inspection reporting and management system relied on for operational safety by Fortune 500 railroads, equipment leasing companies, and the Federal Railroad Administration.

Jason is the author of the book “Getting Started with Grails”, along with several articles and tutorials involving this exciting framework. Jason’s interests include dynamic languages, lightweight development methodologies, improving developer productivity, and a quest to keep programming fun. It’s these interests that led Jason to become a Grails committer and evangelist. You can find Jason online at jasonrudolph.com.
